This month we are celebrating the 35th anniversary of Maus, Warwick, Matthews & Company! 35 years ago Bill Maus, Steve Warwick and Hansen Matthews got together to create the commercial real estate company you know today. According to a 1987 press release by Bernadette Hearne, it seemed that all of New Hanover County was covered in the blue and white MWM signs overnight! 

In The Beginning

The trio decided to leave their secure jobs with an established firm to step out of their comfort zone and start their own business. According to Steve Warwick, they had been working together for a few years and got along well, so they decided to start their own company and make their own rules. They each agreed on their business practices, but had different talents and interests, which complemented each other well. Thus, Maus, Warwick, Matthews & Company was born!

Getting Started

It was a great sort of turning point for the guys when Bern Bullard Commercial and The Amons Corp of Raleigh, some of the state’s largest developers, chose them to represent their properties in Wilmington. They were chosen because they can be trusted to give good local representation, which still reigns true today. The partners consider their knowledge, service and expertise to be what sets them apart from the rest. 

At the end of their original press release, Hansen Matthews noted that they have gotten great support from the Wilmington community on their business ventures. Which has never wavered over the past 35 years. Steve Warwick stated that their goal was to “ have orderly and intelligent growth,” and “ be a part of growth that, 15 or 20 years down the road, we can look at and be proud of.” After 35 years, the firm definitely has a lot to be proud of!

C.  Wilmington and the surrounding communities have seen a lot of positive changes over this period of time.  The completion of I-40 to our Port City was a huge improvement for our commerce markets. Another improvement was opening the Cape Fear River for larger ships. The growth in the beach communities and small business have all been great assets for our area market.  We are blessed and fortunate to be here working in this period of our area and markets economic growth and prosperity.”
